WHERE DESIGN IDEAS COME FROM
MISSION: We are proposing the creation of a Fine Arts degree in Media Design in academies and universities world wide. The program addresses the design process with special emphasis on concept development for Screen, Television, Theater, Photography and Urban Entertainment. While not specifically focused on Architecture, Interior Design, Industrial Design, and Urban design, these undergraduate studies can profit greatly from these master classes. Undergraduate degrees in Film, Television, Theater, Photography, Architecture and Urban Design traditionally leave this area of concept development unaddressed, as it is relatively un-dimensional, yet critical to resolving any challenge or project. As an example learning to fly takes hours of study and technical skill, especially if your going to the moon. But the real question is how does one presuppose a destination, set a plan and seek out a destination, or are we simply using these technical skills because they exist with only a sketch idea of where we are going and why we are going there. Some design concepts exist and require evaluation, is this a project worthy of my time and why? Some concepts are yet to be born and only the challenge exists. Mind mapping the options and alternatives along the design decision path is crucial. Critical to successful design decision making are studies in idea development, mind mapping, imagineering, idea connectivity, narrative design, the design biosphere and basic issues surrounding where ideas come from. Critical to the process is how to encourage them to "appear" and most importantly to discard the faulty ones. This conceptual process is a seriously unaddressed part of our educational design system. The justification for a masters class is the the realization that ideas shape the world and designers must birth them. The idea birthing process which formulates those designs speaks to millions and millions of people every hour world wide.
